Electric Boat Helping Drive Connecticut Manufacturing Job Growth

Connecticut's manufacturing sector is showing signs of renewed momentum, and General Dynamics Electric Boat is playing a major role.


The Groton-based submarine manufacturer has significantly expanded hiring in 2026, helping reverse manufacturing job losses seen over the past year. The company plans to hire approximately 8,000 new employees across its Connecticut and Rhode Island facilities this year as demand for Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines continues to grow.

While the hiring surge has boosted Connecticut's manufacturing workforce, the state still has ground to make up. Manufacturing employment remains below pre-pandemic levels, with Connecticut needing more than 6,000 additional manufacturing jobs to return to where it stood in early 2020.


Industry leaders say Electric Boat's continued growth is creating opportunities not only within the company, but also for suppliers, skilled trades, and manufacturers throughout the state. As one of Connecticut's largest employers, the company's long-term submarine programs are expected to support thousands of jobs for years to come.
