Connecticut Residents Report Nearly Double the Scams in 2025, BBB Says
CONNECTICUT — Residents in Connecticut filed nearly twice as many scam reports with the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker in 2025 compared to the previous year, with reported losses totaling about $2.6 million.

According to the BBB serving Connecticut, the number of scam reports jumped significantly last year, highlighting a sharp increase in fraudulent activity targeting consumers across the state.
A total of 1,767 reports were filed with the BBB’s Scam Tracker in 2025, up from 918 in 2024. Of those reporting scams, around 40 percent said they lost money to fraudsters.
The most commonly reported scams included online purchase scams, phishing schemes, and employment scams. Residents reported losing the most money to investment scams, followed by employment-related scams and online purchase fraud.
Phishing scams, in which fraudsters attempt to trick people into revealing personal information such as banking or Social Security details, surged with hundreds of reports. Online purchase scams often involved fake listings or products that never arrived after payment was sent. Employment scams included fraudulent job offers that required upfront fees or personal information.
One victim shared that scammers posing as a bank fraud department representative used personal details to gain trust before convincing the individual to transfer thousands of dollars. Incidents like these underscore how sophisticated some scam operations have become.
The BBB continues to urge Connecticut residents and businesses to be vigilant, verify information before making payments or sharing private data, and report any suspected fraud through Scam Tracker or appropriate authorities.
